Vocabulary Development

Reading comprehension skills, communication skills, salaries and employment positions are dependent upon vocabulary. The higher the vocabulary, the greater the opportunities in life. Do not neglect developing vocabulary through study, the written word, and conversation. The Reading Development Series, Pathway Working With Words, Word Roots, and Vocabulary Virtuoso are terrific aids for all ages through to adults.

Word Roots
Word Roots teach your child the meanings of Latin and Greek prefixes, roots, and suffixes commonly used in English. Learning word elements dramatically improves spelling and the ability to decode unfamiliar words. Word Roots will add hundreds of words to your students’ vocabulary and greater depth to their thinking and writing. The books include a pretest/post-test, answers, and a dictionary of words derived from Latin or Latin/Greek roots. (Reproducible workbooks)

Working with Words:
• workbooks for grades 4-8
• vocabulary development and spelling exercises. Older children would benefit from starting with the Grade 5 workbook
• comprehensive enough even adults can benefit
• can be used with the Pathway Readers, Climbing to Good English, or on their own as a vocabulary development and spelling program

Vocabulary Virtuoso
Increases vocabulary, stimulates imagination, and boosts language arts skills. Each lesson contains definitions, pronunciation keys, parts of speech, and
alternate choices for each word made up of synonyms, idioms, and/or phrases. Exercises require critical reading and writing skills, use other forms of the words as different parts of speech, and emphasizes correct spelling. Over 150 words per level. Reproducible.

Reading Development Series (RD)
While all of the words are taken from the reader at the corresponding level in the Reading Development Series, these books help to grow your vocabulary significantly. Includes common foreign words, some archaic words, and lots of words every well-educated person should know. Note: The pages at the end of
the book do include comprehension questions from the reader but these pages can simply be skipped if using the book solely for vocabulary development.
